I found this recent article on Brian McLaren & the "Emerging Church". Doug Pagitt is also mentioned in the article as helping to coin the term "Emerging Church".
One of the funniest quotes from the article:
“If you have some person or movement coming along calling into question the non-negotiables of Christianity, then those who espouse Christianity find such a challenge dangerous,” said Donald Carson, professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Illinois, who has criticized McLaren’s theology.
Though a “creative, sparkly writer,” added Carson, McLaren has “got so many things wrong in his analysis that his work is not going to last that long.”
OK,
"creative, sparkly writer"?
I have to admit that I am not much better than Mr. Carson at coming up with adjectives, but come on; either Mr. Carson is a complete idiot, or he was being very condescending.
I am a little irritated, but for the most part I find his ignorance to be sadly funny.
By the way...

I would admit a third possibility (which doesn't necessarily rule out your two):
Jealousy.
I mean, deep down, who doesn't want to be creative and sparkly?
Seriously though, this kind of criticism has been going on for a long time. You just have to laugh at some people who think that tenets of faith which were only developed in the last hundred years are "non-negotiables."
Yes-I love it when people think that the "traditional church" is only what was developed in this country since 1940.
Uh, there's at LEAST a few thousand years of history before then.
Complete morons!
(OK, maybe not COMPLETE-but moronic thinking nonetheless)
